Threads or Fillers?
Updated: Apr 7
As we age, there’s a reason those ‘firming’ creams don’t work. They’re not giving skin the fuel it needs to hold itself up. This is why choosing something like fillers, threads or sutures can reverse the look of aging. But what should you choose?
Here's what you should know:
Fillers can be much more effective at contouring the face, volumizing specific areas of concern such as the cheeks which become willowy as you age, sculpting and wrinkle smoothing in very targeted areas – this is often called 3D facial contouring or a "liquid face lift".
Thread lifts and dermal filler injections are both methods of rejuvenating the face without undergoing an invasive surgical procedure. While each type of procedure can produce beautiful, youthful results for the right candidates, thread lifts and dermal fillers address signs of aging in a different way. As a result, they provide different outcomes. As suggested by their names, thread lifts work by lifting while dermal fillers work by filling.
Thread lifts are designed to elevate sagging tissue to a younger position. This is possible as absorbable surgical threads are placed underneath the skin and pulled, which suspends the lax tissue. The Silhouette InstaLift also incorporates Sculptra® Aesthetic in small bidirectional cones, which helps promote collagen growth over time.
The dermal filler procedure involves injecting product into areas where volume has depleted with age. This not only restores a more youthful facial contour, but helps diminish fine lines and wrinkles for a smoother appearance.
Neck & Jaw
Although threads and sutures can be inserted almost anywhere, one area where they are especially effective is the neck and jawline. The lower third of the face is challenging to treat effectively with botulinum toxin or injectable fillers, which are most effective in the upper and middle third of the face, respectively. The picture included here is of a thread treatment.
Determining which treatment is more appropriate for you will depend upon the condition of your skin and your personal preference. For some patients, a thread lift and dermal filler injections can be performed together, complementing each other and providing more significant improvement.
Both procedures are considered temporary, but threads and sutures generally produces longer-lasting results, as they continue to stimulate collagen production.
